Horses are a rare commodity in the Southwest, possessed mostly by the wealthy and by military organisations.

Horses came perilously close to extinction in the aftermath of the Great War. They proved particularly susceptible to many of the bio-weapons released during the conflict, and numbers fell dramatically. It is estimated that by the 2030s there were less than two hundred horses in the entire Southwest.

With the gradual re-establishment of civilisation from the 2040s onwards, various breeding programs were set up, mostly by militia groups wanting to provide their members with mounts. By the late 2050s horse numbers were considered stable, and the population has increased slowly ever since.

There are currently estimated to be around 2300 horses in the Southwest, around 1400 of which are held by the D'Entrecasteaux Defence Corps, the Frankland Border Patrol, the Denmark Peace Force, the Porongurup Rangers, and the Southern Union Telegraph Company. The others are divided between smaller companies and militias, and private individuals.

Apart from occasional runaways (that are usually quickly recaptured) there are no wild horses in the Southwest. The closely related Gore Horse on the other hand can be found in most wild areas.
