The Southern Cross is a small, yet prominent constellation of the southern sky. Visible throughout the year it is a useful aid to navigation as (in combination with the nearby 'pointers', Alpha and Beta Centauri) it can be used to quickly and accurately determine south.

The easily recognisable constellation appears on many insignia and logos throughout the Southwest. It is particularly popular with the union movement.
