Characteristics

The KFF-60 was designed as a short range defensive weapon, capable of taking down a gore horse or wild auroch with a few well placed shots. The weapon is extremely rugged - it was deliberately over-engineered - and its reliability is legendary. It is said that one can clean and oil a KFF-60, bury it in a sand dune for two years, dig it out, clean it, and it will fire first time.

The standard ammunition for the KFF-60 is the 10mm medium which provides serious stopping power against most targets. For those wanting even more power, it will also take the 10mm long. Either cartridge is more than capable of taking down a full grown man with one good shot.

Popularity and Imitations

The KFF-60 is one of the most popular handguns in the Southwest, with total sales exceeding 7,000 over its 15 years of production. It is the standard sidearm of the Porongurup Rangers.

Other firearm manufacturers have created their own imitations of the KFF-60. The most well known of these are the Frankland Arms Company's FAC-17 (official sidearm of the Frankland Border Patrol), and the Wunderkind WK10mm. Opinions on the standard of these weapons is mixed.

KFF-61a 'Homesteader'

The Kwinana Firearm Foundry produces one variant on the KFF-60, the KFF-61a, known as the 'Homesteader'. This is somewhat simplified version of the 60 intended for the Independent Settlements where a gunsmith skilled enough to repair the complex feed mechanism of the 60 may not always be available.

First produced in 2084, the weapon appears virtually identical to the KFF-60, although it is longer by half a centimetre to accommodate the simplified feed mechanism. The maximum range is reduced by five metres to fifty five, and it is intended to take only 10mm Medium ammunition. With modification it can accept 10mm Long, but there is an increased chance of jamming.

To compensate for the decreased range and lower stopping power of the gun, the KFF-61a magazine holds two extra rounds, for a total of nine. A popular modification for the KFF-60 is to fit a Homesteader magazine, however this can lead to problems with jamming.

The Homesteader is the offical sidearm of the Borden Engineers.
