The STS Leeuwin II, usually refered to simply as The Leeuwin, is the largest sailing vessel in the Southwest.

History

The Leeuwin was constructed as a sail training vessel prior to the Great War. In the immediate aftermath of the War she made an epic voyage of almost 3,000km from the far north town of Broome to Albany, carrying 100 survivors.

The ship remained at anchor in Albany harbour throughout the Winter, maintained by her crew. Once the worst of the Winter had passed she began exploration and trading expeditions along the south coast, and was for many years the main transporter of whale oil to the other states.

With the establishment of the D'Entrecasteaux lumber trade she shifted to the Windy Harbour to Albany timber run. She has held the record for the run since 2077, completing the journey in just under 12 hours.

She is currently owner by a consortium of Porongurup businessmen known as The Leeuwin Group.

Description

The Leeuwin is 55 metres long and 9 metres across at her widest point. She is a 3 masted barquentine with a main mast 33 metres tall. When fully rigged she carries over 810 square metres of canvas. A full crew complement consists of 55 people.
