The South Western Road is the major road linking the Southern States. It runs from Albany to Manjimup passing through Walpole and Denmark Town, along with several other major settlements. It is a sealed road and passable all year round, making it a major trade route.

Between Walpole and Shannon the road passes for over 60 kilometres through the Shannon Wilderness. Travelers on this section have often been prey to robbers and bandits, and caravans often form up at either end before making the trip.
