Leeuwin Wilderness

The Leeuwin Wilderness is the depopulated region fronting the Southern Ocean to the west of D'Entrecasteaux State and south of the Blackwood River. Although it has no official boundaries it spans roughly 60 kilometres east-west and 30 north-south, covering approximately 1800 square kilometres.

Formerly the location of several settlements, the wilderness was depopulated by both the Satellite Plague in 2067 and the War of 2081. The only notable population centres today are the warlord settlements of Gomtown and Karridale, although a few families of destitute fisher-folk are known to inhabit the dunes along the coast.

The wilderness generally has a bad reputation, with tales of escaped convicts, cannibalistic hermits, mutants and even stranger things. The coastal dunes are said to be particularly eerie, especially on moonlit nights. It has been said that there is no stronger experience of how far humanity has fallen post the Great War than to look northwards across the miles of darkness from the Scott River Dunes on a night of the full moon.

Pretension aside, the western section of the wilderness is badly contaminated by seepage from the Molloy Island Chemical Weapons Station, and tales of mutant wildlife in this area cannot be entirely discounted. Parties from the Warlord Realms also wander into the wilderness from time to time and can pose a serious threat to the unprepared.

Travel into the Leeuwin Wilderness from the States is rare. Hunters from Lake Jasper occasionally penetrate the eastern end, and the DDC occasionally carries out patrols and exercises in the same area. Otherwise the region is mostly left to itself.
