The Treaty of the States is a treaty, signed by the Southern States of D'Entrecasteaux, Frankland, Denmark and Porongurup on March 25th 2071. It formalised relations between the Southern States and provided for the creation of three additional states.

Work began on the treaty in May 2070 in Denmark Town. Delegations from all four states along with representatives from Bremer Bay and observers from Borden took part, with negotiations running until September. The final text of the treaty was approved on September 25th, and the States given six months to approve and ratify the treaty.

Key Points

Key points of the treaty included:

  • Fixing of official State borders
  • Outlawing of slavery throughout the States
  • Democratic representation of all citizens
  • Mutual defence among the States
  • Extradition of criminals across State borders
  • Co-operation and negotiation between State Governments

State of Stirling

The original draft of the treaty included a provision for the establishment of a State of Stirling based around Borden. The Government of Borden and many of the other Settlements strongly objected to this suggestion, and finalisation of the treaty was delayed for several months while the resulting diplomatic crisis was dealt with. The final draft still included the Stirling clause, but it was made explicit that such an entity could only come into existence by the efforts of the people of the Settlements.

State of Pallinup

The treaty included provision for the people of Bremer Bay and Boxwood Hill to combine into a new State, the State of Pallinup. The requirements established by the treaty were met in 2072 and Pallinup came into existence on March 25th, a year to the day of the original signing.

State of Leeuwin

The treaty also included provision for the establishment of a State to the west of D'Entrecasteaux. This has not come to pass, and the area remains part of the Warlord Realms.

Treaty Day

March 25th is celebrated each year in the Southern States as Treaty Day.
